The Menlun Botanical Garden , covering
130 hectares on the Hulu Island on the Luosuo River , and situated
95 kilometers to the northwest of mengla County , is the site of the
Yunnan Provincial Tropical Plant Research Institute . More than 3000
varieties of tropical cash plants , wild plants and ornamental plants
are grown in the park 12 special zones , 1700 of them are native tropical
plants , including Maytenus horkeri , a precious tree whose leaves
can be used to treat cancer patients . In the dense forests there
are experimental affore station centres . The space of the garden

growing in different spaces . Having achieved more than 120 periodical
results in the development , utlization , domestication and planting
of plants , the garden has become China centre for the study of tropical

) Sandbar

Known in the language of the
Dai people as Menghan , the Ganlan Sandbar on the Lancang River
is a world famous peacock tail “ , meaning the most beautiful part
of xishuangbanna .Trip to Xishuangbanna is complete without a
visit to Ganlan Sandbar “ , as the popular saying goes . Situated
at the end of a 37-kilometers trip down the Lancang River from
Jinghong , and covering an area of 50 square kilometers at an
altitude of 530 meters ( the lowest |

point of Xishuangbanna ) , the
Ganlan(Olive ) Sandbar derives its name from the fact that it
is forever clothed in greenery and that it takes the shape of
an olive . A total of 64 Dai-inhbited villages are found on the
sandbar ,and bamboo abodes gleam in the verdure of coconut trees
, with water flowing past them all the year round , and flowers
in full bloom in all four seasons , synonymous to the Dai people
dwellings . The Ganlan Sandbar , its tropical landscape looking
sylvan in the ethnic Dai tradition , evinces an air of classic
sanctity and natural repose . |

Octagonal
Pagoda

Under the guise of different
names , the Octagonal Pagoda is the most famous architectural
site in xishuangbanna . It stands on a man-made hill 14
kilometres ( 8 miles ) west of Menghai , just off the main road
, near Jingzhen Village ; it is also known as Jingzhen Pagoda
( Jingzhenta )
The story of the temple's construction revolves around two pious
locals who wanted simultaneously to honour the Buddha and put
an end to atyranny of marauding wasps . Between the years 1698-1701
they supervised the construction of wasp-displacing hill , built
the temple and encouraged religious gatherings . |
