GUILIN

 

	Guilin has always been famous in China for its scenery and has been eulogised in innu merable literary works ,paintings and inscriptions since its founding . for all that ,and despite the fact that for the Chinese Gulin is rated the most beautiful spot in the world -the world of course meaning China -most Western visitors find it a big disappointment. The stunning limestone peaks are not much
	evidence on Guilin's polluted and congested street . The city was founded during the Qin Dynasty and developed as a transport centre with the building of the Ling Canal which linked the important Pearl and Yangzi river systems. Under the Ming it was a provincial capital ,a status it retained until 1914 when Nanning became the capital ,during the 1930s and throughout WW Two Guilin was a Communist stronghold and its population expanded from about 100,000 to over a million as people sought refuge here .Today it's the home  of over 300,000.
	While it's worth spending a day cycling around Guilin ,it's not really such a good idea to spend much longer than this. A combination of heat ,hazy skies , industry ,congested street ,enormous crowds and tourism hype make Guilin one of China's most overrated travel experiences. If you don't want to be disappointed  , hightail it down to the finer scenery and unhurried pace of Yanshuo and the villages around it .  This content comes from Lonely Planet.
