YUNNAN 26 Minorities 

	10. The Wa , concentrated in remote hills between the Mekong and Salween rivers on the Burmese border , accompany their ritual with drums--brown .    BACK

 

	11.The Naxi , from  the Lijiang area , within the loop of the Upper Yangze River (Jinsha Jiang ) , are one of the few non-Chinese people to have a writing of their own . This rebus-pictographis script , called dongba wen , is preserved in samll , horizontal booklets and coloured cartoon-like scrolls that depict deities , infernal creatures and natural phenomenon . Other rare artfacts includes ritual trumpets , headdresses , wooden plaques and clay figurines .    BACK

 

	12. The Yao , are broadly distributed over six of China's provinces inYunnan they live in the southeastern most corner and still practice slash-and-burn agriculture . They are often confused with the Miao .    BACK

	13. The Zang, (Tibetan ) have resided for centuries in northernmost Yunnan near the Tibetan border . Most adhere to the Yellow hat (Gelupa ) school of Tibetan Buddhism , and their religious life is centred on few larg monasteries .   BACK

 

	14. The  Jinpo , scattered throug the far west of the province , have large , two handed swords and intricat jewellery looking like silver armou . They also  build tall , coloured pagodas .    BACK

	15. the Bulang , ( Blang )closely related to the Wa and De'ang , have been strongly influenced by the Dai . They live in Dai-style bamboo house , speak Dai as a second language and , when literat , know written Dai. their polytheism has found place alongside Theravad Buddhism .   BACK

 

	16. The Pumi, are spread across northwestern Yunnan . They are know for their colourful costumes and a rich oral tradition . The women especially wear long skirts with bright sashes and sheepskin cloaks . The Pumi are closely related to the Qiang of Sichuan province and probably migrated from even farther north in the plateau grasslands of Qinghai-Gansu .   BACK

 

	17. The Buyi , come from the mountainous eastern and southeastern parts of the province . They are similar to the majority Han , though their men sometimes wear head scarves and the women may wear a head scrf , robe and pleated dress for special occasions . Buyi batik work is outstanding .

	18. The Achang , from the Burmese border are known for their warlike swords and daggers .    BACK
